Disney’s Live-Action Aladdin Cast Revealed.
This weekend at D23 Expo, The Walt Disney Studios revealed the two leads of their upcoming live-action Aladdin movie. With recent reports confirming that Disney is struggling to find their leads, the Studio surprised everyone with their announcement of the actor and actress playing live-action Aladdin and Jasmine. Mena Massoud – who was born in Egypt and raised in Canada – is set to play the role of Aladdin. The actor will also play Tarek Kassar in the upcoming TV Show Jack Ryan. Naomi Scott – a British actress and singer whose mother is from northern India – will play the role of Jasmine. She also played recently Kimberly (Pink Ranger) in this year’s Power Rangers. Disney also confirmed that Will Smith is set to play the role of the Genie.

Guy Ritchie (Snatch, The Man From U.N.C.L.E., Sherlock Holmes, Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels) is directing the movie based on a screenplay by John August (Charlie’s Angels, Big Fish, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Dark Shadows). The movie is not a direct adaptation of the original Aladdin movie. The classic collection of stories One Thousand and One Nights is also an inspiration for the new film.

Live-action Aladdin joins a long list of live-action adaptations by Disney. The list includes Cinderella, The Jungle Book, Pete’s Dragon, Beauty and the Beast. And to come, the new Mulan movie from director Niki Caro, and The Lion King from director Jon Favreau.
Live-action Aladdin will start shooting next August in London.
