Box Office Flop, ‘F’ CinemaScore: Paramount Defends “Mother!”
Paramount’s Mother! debuted below expectations on Box Office this weekend. The movie opened with just $7.5 Million domestically. Making it the lowest opening weekend for Jennifer Lawrence nationwide. Mother! joins a list of many flops this year for Paramount Pictures. Rings grossed only $27.7 Million domestically, and Monster Trucks reached $33 Million. Also Scarlett Johansson’s Ghost in the Shell bombed at the Box Office with just $40 Million domestically and $110 Million production budget. Baywatch makes also the list with just $58 Million domestically.
- Dunkirk is Christopher Nolan’s Most Personal Film Yet.
- Steven Soderbergh’s Logan Lucky: Critics’ Reviews.
Mother! was also hurt by its ‘F’ CinamaScore from audience. The film became only the 12th title in history to earn an ‘F’, and couldn’t compete against big hit “It”. The movie still gets a 68% score from Rotten Tomatoes, and 74/100 from Metacritic. And has led to a lot of discussions, debates and theorizing.
Megan Colligan, Paramount worldwide president of marketing and distribution, said in an official statement, defending the film:
“This movie is very audacious and brave,”
“You are talking about a director at the top of his game, and an actress at the top her game. They made a movie that was intended to be bold. Everyone wants original filmmaking, and everyone celebrates Netflix when they tell a story no one else wants to tell. This is our version. We don’t want all movies to be safe. And it’s okay if some people don’t like it.”
